Talk:Considerations when creating ext3 filesystems

From Ext4
Jump to: navigation, search

Real life ext3 failure, 2 TB filesystem. fsck was unable to fix the problem within a week, even with 64Bit linux, 4GB RAM and a huge (64GB) swap partition. I would not recommend ext3 for anything bigger than 200GB. The wiki should contain a clear warning about ext3 and TB-sized filesystems! It is nearly impossible to fix a big (TB-size) inconsistent ext3 filesystem. Our "fix" was a backup (!) to a big data store and put the data on several small ext3-filesystems afterwards. Actually not funny. --Treffer 12:44, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Send me e-mail (@mit.edu).... can you tell me more about your large filesystem? Number of files, number of directories, were you doing anything like using lots of hard links via some backup system, etc.? Tytso 22:28, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
